THANK YOU KENT PLACE ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITY

Many thanks to Kent Place Assisted Living Community for their generous donation to Dorothy Fox PTA in support of our students! We greatly appreciate their kindness! Students from Mrs. Collins’ blended 1st grade/2nd grade class, Dr. Sork, and PTA members, visited Kent Place Assisted Living Community to accept their gracious donation of $335. Kent Place sold concessions at a local event and donated the profits to Fox. Many of the residents featured in the photo have family at Fox or previously worked for Camas Schools. We are very grateful to have such support from the Kent Place community!

It's time again for our Annual Dorothy Fox Staff Holiday Cookie Exchange!

We are looking for parents and children to bake their favorite holiday cookies or candies for our staff. Each staff member can then bring home a selection of goodies for the holidays. We are also adding a small candy section this year full of gum drops, chocolate kisses, ribbon candy and other holiday treats.

The exchange will be on Dec.19th. Please send your cookies/candies by 10:00 am in a disposable container or a container clearly marked with your name and phone number. If dropping off before the 19th, please leave in the PTA office.

You can help make this event extra special by bringing in 3 dozen of your favorite cookie or candy treat to share (cookies, gingerbread, fudge, peppermint bark, etc.). It does not have to be fancy, just yummy! Please list the name of your item(s) in the sign up slot and bring the recipe with the items if you can.

DUE TO POTENTIAL NUT ALLERGIES, PLEASE INDICATE IF YOUR ITEMS CONTAIN NUTS.

PTA SILENT AUCTION UPDATE

The Dorothy Fox PTA hosted a Silent Auction at our Fall Reading Night "Fantastic Books and Where to Find Them!" on November 7th.

Thanks to all who attended and helped raise $4,000 to support the PTA programs at Fox!

THANK YOU for helping to make our first-ever Silent Auction an incredible success! We greatly appreciate all the donations that were graciously given to make the night a success! The classroom art projects and class baskets were very popular items in our auction and they showcased our students’ creativity! We are so grateful for the time, care and inventiveness students, teachers and volunteers put into classroom projects.

We also want to thank our main sponsors Riverview Community Bank and Winco and many donors from Fox students, staff and parents, businesses, and non-profit organizations for providing such wonderful and generous donations. Thank you!

PTA SUPPORTS THE FOX LIBRARY

BIRTHDAY BOOK CLUB

Exciting things are happening at Dorothy Fox Library! This year the library and the PTA launched a new Birthday Book Club. Thanks to our generous Fox families, the Birthday Book program has raised almost $2,500 to bring new books onto our library shelves! It has been a fun program to launch. Kids enjoy selecting a special book that will be added to our library collection in honor of their birthday!

If you are interested in purchasing a birthday book for your child, please fill out the form and return to the school. Even if their birthday has already happened, we are happy to celebrate their belated birthday with a book. -->click here for the form or visit www.dorothyfoxpta.com/fox-library

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR - SAVE THE DATE

And our library is also gearing up for its very own Scholastic Book Fair! This year, the Spring Book Fair will benefit our library!

FOX SCHOOL GARDEN UPDATE

As our 2018 season is winding down, I would like to take this opportunity to thank students, Fox staff and parent volunteers for all their enthusiasm and work in the Fox School Garden this year!

Some of the crops that students grew included:

  • Berry Patches: raspberries, salmon berries, strawberries, blueberries

  • Pizza Garden: tomatoes, peppers, oregano, parsley, and basil

  • Three Sisters Garden: squash, beans, and corn

  • Pea Patch: Oregon sugar peas

  • Salad Gardens: Lettuce, kale, cucumbers, micro greens, and radishes

  • Herbs

  • Cover crops: Austrian winter peas, fava beans, crimson clover, hairy vetch and wheat

By far, students were most excited about the mammoth sunflowers they planted from seeds in the spring. The giant flowers towered over students as they returned to school in September and returning students were able to observe the complete life-cycle of the sunflowers and many other plants and insects.

As we welcome winter, is it a great time to observe the changes in the garden and work with students to plan their 2019 gardens. If you are interested in volunteering, please let me know.

Happy Winter!

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE - Coming Soon to Fox!

Artist-in-Residence: Chloe Hight

Coming to Fox in January, February, and April (Each class gets 5 sessions)

This wonderful opportunity for students is funded by our Run For The Arts fundraiser last year. Thank you for helping bring Arts to Fox!

Program Description: Looking Closely

This residency provides students with the opportunity to slow down and look closely to reveal important details and connections. Individual students will choose an item such as a native plant or insect to examine through a scientific and artistic lens. They will observe the visual characteristics of their subject such as, line, shape, color, pattern, and texture and discuss their findings with the class. As discoveries are shared, students will develop both science and art vocabulary and begin making connections between the two disciplines. Chloë introduces and demonstrates both observational drawing and relief printmaking techniques, while integrating scientific observation and principles and elements of art. Through both mediums, student’s explore the ideas of scale and representational vs. abstract by zooming in and drawing their plant or insect three separate times, finding more detail with each drawing. These drawings will then be mounted on an accordion fold book for final display at STEAM Night in March.
